If you are unable to hold your sale because of rain or emergency, you must notify the City Secretary’s office before noon on the first day of the sale, or the following business day before noon if the City Secretary’s office is not open on the first day of the sale. The permit will have to be returned to the City Secretary’s office and will be held for up to 60 days to reschedule, after which time a new permit must be purchased.
Under no circumstance (including rain) will permit dates be changed or time extended once you have started your sale.

Garage sale permits are $10. If purchased through the City of Victoria website, there is an additional $3 convenience fee added to the price of the permit.
Garage sales can be held once every six months at the same address unless a change of occupancy has occurred, in which the new occupant could conduct a sale at the address. Please contact the City Secretary’s Office to purchase a permit for an address for an address you recently moved to for which a garage sale has been held less than six months previously. Documentation of the recent move may be required.
A garage sale can be held for up to three consecutive days.
You must have your permit before opening your garage sale; therefore it could be purchased on the day the sale is to begin as long as the sale is not opened before the permit is purchased.
To purchase a garage sale permit you need the address of where the sale is to be held, the name of the owner or occupant, and the days in which the sale is to be held.

The next available date for a garage sale is printed on your permit or you can check your availability on the City of Victoria’s website in the City Secretary’s portion of the website. You may also verify the next available date for a garage sale by calling the City Secretary’s office at 361-485-3040.
You do not need a garage sale permit for an estate sale if the sale is held inside the home and no sale items are viewable from the street.
You do not need a City of Victoria garage sale permit if conducting your sale outside of city limits.
By City Code definition a “‘garage sale’ shall mean a sale or an offer for sale of miscellaneous items to the general public, upon residential property not otherwise being used for commercial purposes.”
You cannot place or project signs, sign structures, or sign supports over any public property or right-of-way (sidewalks and intersections); or place signs upon trees, rocks, bridges or utility poles. Questions should be directed to Code Enforcement at 361-485-3330.
