[ARCHIVED] Giving the whole nine yards for yard waste collection

Dead leaves in paper bags

Spring is the busiest time of year for the City of Victoria’ yard waste collection service. As residents spring into action to spruce up their yards, the City’s Environmental Services department sometimes sees double or even triple the usual volume of yard waste!

With so much more waste to pick up, our crews will sometimes need more than one day to finish the routes. So if your yard waste is still sitting out on the curb at the end of the day, just leave (leaf?) it there, and it will be picked up the next day.

During this busy time of year, it’s more important than ever to store your yard waste correctly so that our crews can pick it up quickly. Yard waste should be stored in:

  • Containers of yard waste. Standard trash cans marked Do This. Tubs marked Not This.Paper bags
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Standard 33-gallon trash cans that can be easily dumped

Here are some examples of containers that are NOT accepted:

  • Plastic bags
  • Non-standard plastic tubs
  • Barrels
  • Your City-issued trash or recycling cart

Each container must weigh no more than 50 pounds, with no materials sticking out. Yard waste can also be stacked in small, neatly tied bundles that are no more than 4 feet long and 2 feet wide. All yard waste must be placed 5 feet away from surrounding obstacles on all sides.

So, make sure your yard waste is stored correctly—or the pickup crew might just make like a tree and leave!
