[ARCHIVED] City, artists prepare for Laurent Street underpass mural painting

Mural design for two walls featuring flowers, mariachis, dancers, cattle, heron, armadillo

PHOTO: The Laurent Street underpass mural will feature imagery that celebrates Victoria’s heritage and identity. The two designs shown here will be painted on either wall of the underpass. Local photographers Janice Carriger, Ted Goris and Elias Rodriguez provided reference photos for some of the images.

UP Art Studio and local artists will soon begin decorating the Laurent Street underpass with a mural that will give motorists a colorful reminder of Victoria’s rich heritage.

The Laurent Street underpass mural, which was commissioned by the City to be painted ahead of Victoria’s bicentennial next year, features imagery that celebrates Victoria’s identity:

  • Mariachis and ballet folklorico dancers, honoring Victoria’s Hispanic heritage
  • Cattle ranching imagery, including the Martín de León brand
  • Native plants and animals

The mural will also include a clear protective coating to preserve the mural and make it easier to clean and maintain.

The Laurent Street underpass was chosen because of its ample space and smooth surface relative to other locations.

The mural was designed by UP Art Studio and approved by the City Council after a period of public input.

Local artists leave their mark

UP Art Studio is coordinating with Crossroads Art House to recruit local artists to help paint the mural.

In addition, local photographers Janice Carriger, Ted Goris and Elias Rodriguez provided reference photos for the mural’s design.

The City will begin power-washing the underpass next week. Priming will begin later this month.

While the mural is being painted, the City will conduct periodic road closures or lane closures in the area. Full road closures, when they are needed, will be scheduled overnight; the road will remain open to two-way traffic during the day.
