With temperatures expected to drop below freezing this weekend, the City of Victoria is taking steps to prepare and encouraging residents to do the same.
Protect pipes responsibly
Resident should follow these tips to protect their pipes without burdening the City’s water supply:
- Please allow only the farthest faucet from your meter to slowly drip. If you live in an apartment, only let one faucet drip in your unit.
- Cover the faucets outside the house to keep them from freezing.
- Open up cabinets in your house to let air circulate around indoor pipes, and keep your house warm.
- Turn off your sprinkler/irrigation lines.
- If you have a leak, contact Public Works at 361-485-3380 to turn your meter off.
Public Works will have additional staffing during the weekend to monitor the City’s water levels and address any leaks or other issues that may arise. The Surface Water Treatment Plant will also have generators on standby in case of a power outage.
Keeping an eye on the roads
City crews on Saturday will place de-icing aggregate on streets that are susceptible to ice, such as bridges. Crews will remain on standby throughout the weekend to monitor conditions and re-apply aggregate if needed.
Preventive measures on state roadways will be handled by the Texas Department of Transportation.
Residents are encouraged to drive cautiously and keep an eye out for ice on roadways. If your vehicle starts to slide, ease off the gas pedal or brakes and steer into the direction of the skid.
Solid Waste pickups may be delayed
Solid Waste pickups for Monday, Jan. 26, may be delayed. Residents should leave their carts on the curb for the entire day.
The City of Victoria Environmental Services will continue to monitor the weather to determine if any changes to the schedule are needed. Customers will be notified of changes through the City of Victoria Alert Center.
Parks & Recreation closures
The “Dogs in the Park Howliday Pawty” event that was scheduled for Saturday has been canceled.
Riverside Park will close Sunday.
The Texas Zoo will close Saturday and Sunday.
Riverside Golf Course will close Sunday and Monday.
