[ARCHIVED] City lifts boil-water notice; mayor appoints City Council subcommittee to address root cause

Chlorine conversion to continue until Aug. 12.

The City of Victoria lifted the citywide boil-water notice Tuesday evening as Mayor Duane Crocker reaffirmed the City’s commitment to preventing similar problems in the future.

On Monday, following the City’s efforts to raise chlorine levels throughout the water system, the TCEQ confirmed that the chlorine levels are compliant with TCEQ guidelines.

After receiving confirmation of the chlorine levels, the City sent water samples for bacteriological testing, which is the final step in lifting a boil-water notice.

On Tuesday, the TCEQ reviewed the test results and confirmed that the City’s water system is fully compliant.

As a result, the City is lifting the boil-water notice effective Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

With the lifting of the boil-water notice, residents no longer need to boil water and can resume using water normally.

Chlorine conversion to continue

The City will continue the system-wide chlorine conversion for one month, which is the usual time period for this disinfection method. The City will switch back to chloramine disinfectant Tuesday, Aug. 12.

Residents who are conditioning water for dialysis machines or aquariums should continue to follow adjusted pretreatment processes during this time.

City seeks answers and solutions

Now that the boil-water notice has been lifted, the City’s focus will turn more fully toward ensuring that this type of problem does not happen again.

At the July 15 City Council meeting, Mayor Crocker announced the creation of a subcommittee that will conduct a thorough investigation into the water quality failure “to determine what went wrong, why it happened, and how we prevent it from ever happening again.”

“I want to repeat Council’s previously stated position on this matter: this incident with our water supply was unacceptable, and it demands a thorough review and accounting,” the mayor said.

The three-member subcommittee will consist of Mayor Crocker, Mayor Pro-Tem Dr. Andrew Young and Councilwoman Jan Scott.

Mayor Crocker emphasized that the committee will thoroughly review every aspect of the water system and that the committee’s findings will be shared with the public once available.

“No issue will be off the table, and no question will go unasked,” the mayor said. “The citizens of Victoria deserve answers, accountability and action.”
