Victoria Public Library Director Jessica Berger appeared on the City of Victoria’s Town Talk podcast to discuss preparations for the library’s 50th anniversary and the implementation of the library master plan.
To help celebrate the library’s 50 years of history, the librarians have been going through old scrapbooks and records to put together historical displays—a perfect task, Berger noted, because “librarians do love history.”
“They are having too much fun,” she said. “So many times you hear them say, ‘Wow, that’s cool, that’s cool,’ and they come show me what they found.”
Library patrons will be able to look forward to a variety of events and promotions during this milestone year, including a block party, a design-a-library-card contest and a cocktail party benefitting the Friends of the Library’s fundraising efforts.
Berger and her team have also been working toward many of the improvements that patrons requested during the master planning process, including the possibility of creating a porch area at the library for outdoor reading.
“If you visit anywhere else throughout the country, you’re going to see a lot of outside reading areas at libraries,” Berger said. “It’s gained momentum and popularity, so we’re going to try our hand at it.”
By the way, in case you’re wondering about Berger’s reading list: She was a fan of true crime as a teenager, but these days she’s more likely to read cheerful, Hallmark-type stories where “a girl lands in a new town, opens a bakery and falls in love.”
