The City of Victoria Parks & Recreation is upgrading Brownson Park (202 N. Laurent St.) to address wear and tear and improve safety, comfort and enjoyment for young residents.

An old-fashioned play structure that looks like a ship. The existing play equipment at Brownson Park was installed in 1996, and the structures can get hot during the summer because they are uncovered and are made of materials that conduct heat. The upgraded park will include:

  • A new covered play structure
  • Covered swings for all ages
  • Rubber surfacing under play equipment
  • Interactive musical instruments
  • New perimeter fencing
  • Repainting of the basketball court

Construction began Aug. 5 when Parks & Recreation removed the existing swing set. The contractor for the project, Fun Abounds, will begin installing the new play equipment Aug. 12.

The project will be fully completed by Sept. 30.

Park will remain open with rotating closures during construction

The new play structure will be installed on the west side of the park where the swing set was. This area of the park will remain closed while the new structure is being installed, but the basketball court and the existing play structure will remain open and accessible.

Once the new play structure is installed, the new structure will open to the public, and the east side of the park will close for installation of the new swing set and repainting of the basketball court.

What’s next

Parks & Recreation will continue to upgrade and replace park equipment in line with Parks & Recreation master plan recommendations. Upcoming projects include:

  • Pine Street Park: This neighborhood park will be upgraded in 2025. Staff expect to bring a contract to Council for approval later this year.
  • Children’s Park (within Riverside Park): Upgrades for this park will be designed in 2025, with construction tentatively scheduled for 2026.
