In accordance with state and federal law, the Police Department hosts firearms qualifications for retired VPD peace officers. Texas Occupations Code 1701.357 states in part, that the head of a state or local law enforcement agency may allow an honorably retired peace officer an opportunity to demonstrate weapons proficiency if the retired officer meets certain qualifications. If the retiree wishes to participate, then the VPD retirees are required to qualify each year and weapon proficiency is be pursuant to current standards as set by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement as per the training and qualifications requirements for active duty Law Enforcement Officers for carrying a firearm.
Upon showing weapon proficiency, the retired officers receive a Certificate of Firearms Proficiency and/or a Retired Officer Photo Identification Card. Both expire in one year from the date they last demonstrated weapons proficiency.
