Lieutenant of Investigations


Lieutenant Michael Tatum joined the Victoria Police Department in 1977 as a Patrol Officer.

Since hiring on he has held numerous positions including Detective, Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, and in 2004 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant at which time he went to the Patrol Division where he was in charge of 2nd Platoon. In early 2014, Lieutenant Tatum was assigned to the Investigations Division.  In February 2019, he was transferred to the Support Services Division where he currently oversees Telecommunications, Records Management, Crime Prevention and the Training & Recruiting Unit.

Lieutenant Tatum has been a member of the Department’s Honor Guard since its inception. He is also a member of the VPD Bike Patrol.

Lieutenant Tatum graduated from the inaugural class of the Law Enforcement Management Institute in 1991. He currently holds a Master Peace Officers Certificate from Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. He is a certified TCOLE Instructor, and a Firearms Instructor.

Lieutenant Tatum is also a graduate of Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminology.  In October of 2017, the VPD celebrated Lieutenant Tatum's 40th year in law enforcement, all with the Victoria Police Department.
