City Seeking Comments for Victoria 2045 Transportation Plan

Post Date:04/30/2019 8:00 AM

Residents of Victoria County are being asked to share their thoughts and ideas on traffic and other transportation issues through an on-line survey.

The information from the survey will be used in building an updated long-range Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) to address Victoria’s transportation system over the next 25 years. The Victoria Metropolitan Planning Organization (VMPO) is responsible for the urban transportation planning processes that allows Victoria County to secure state and federal transportation funding for roadways and other transportation projects. The latest update will look out to the year 2045 as a roadmap for transportation in Victoria County.

The survey, which is found on a link from the MPO website at www.victoriatx.org/departments/development-services/victoria-mpo, asks residents to share their priorities through a transportation planning scenario, while another allows residents to point to specific areas of concern and leave comments.

The information garnered from the community is critical in determining needs and prioritizing future transportation projects.  For example, in the previous planning cycle, the two highest ranked projects, based on the evaluation criteria, were selected for funding. Those two projects were the upgrading of US 77 at the Guadalupe River from a two-lane undivided to a four-lane divided highway and an overpass at US 87 & FM 447. A complete list of projects is available in the 2040 MTP document at www.victoriatx.org/departments/development-services/victoria-mpo/publications.

What is the MPO?

The VMPO is a federally funded transportation planning organization. Every metropolitan area with a population of more than 50,000 residents has a designated Metropolitan Planning Organization for transportation in order to qualify for federal highway or transit assistance. Certain federal funding for transportation projects and programs is channeled through the MPO’s planning process. The MPO receives monies through different categories of federal funding, each intended for specific types of transportation projects. The Policy Advisory Committee of the VMPO is a 10 member decision making body that oversees the VMPO. It consists of representatives from the city and county governments, the Texas Department of Transportation, the Victoria Regional Airport, and the Port of Victoria.
