Victoria Kids Recycle Program Collects 54,375 Pounds of Paper in Six Weeks

(VICTORIA, TEXAS) - Over a six-week period, students at 13 elementary schools in VISD recycled a total of 54,375 pounds of paper as part of a Victoria Kids Recycle 2011 Green Bin Recycling Contest sponsored by the City of Victoria Environmental Services Program. That translates to 189,000 gallons of water; 89 cubic yards of landfill space; 3,402 gallons of oil and 459 trees that were saved by the students’ recycling efforts. The contest was conducted from March 14 – April 23, 2011.

The Green Bin Recycling Program is a mixed paper recycling program that is in place throughout the school year at in-town Victoria Independent School District elementary schools.  The 13 participating schools have an outside paper receptacle serviced by Waste Management. Collections are taken from students and staff throughout the school year, and deposited using classroom and office recycling bins.

The Environmental Services Program conducts a contest each year to teach and encourage students about the importance of recycling. This year, Environmental Services’ challenge to all participating Green Bin Recycling schools was to put their paper where their dumpster is. Schools that filled their Green Bin to the brim on two different pick-up dates were eligible for a drawing to win tickets to a private magic show performed by local cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Gary Branfman, on May 2 at the Victoria Community Center. Schools filling their dumpsters to capacity on both pick-up dates were Chandler, Dudley, Schorlemmer, Rowland, Shields, Juan Linn, Smith and Vickers elementary schools.

The winner of the drawing was Shields Elementary School.
