Victoria Named “Tree City USA Community” for 12th Consecutive Year

Arbor Day Tree Planting Set for April 29

(VICTORIA, TEXAS) The City of Victoria has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA community for its commitment to urban forestry. Victoria has earned this national designation for the past 12 years.

The Tree City USA Program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. Victoria has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community. Tree City USA communities must have a tree board or department; a tree-care ordinance; a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

In observance of Arbor Day 2011, the City is conducting a tree planting ceremony at 1:30 pm on Friday, April 29 at Fire Station #2, located at 2708 Miori Lane. The community is invited to attend the celebration.

City of Victoria Parks and Recreation Department staff will be on-hand to instruct students from the Smith Elementary S.E.A. Club (Students for Environmental Awareness) and interested individuals on the proper way to plant and care for trees. Two Spanish Oak trees will be planted. The following topics will be discussed:

  • Selection of trees for the Victoria area
  • Proper way to prepare for the planting bed
  • Correct method of removing trees from containers
  • Planting techniques
  • How and when to water – Why is too much as bad as too little?

For more information, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 485-3200. Information about Arbor Day can be found at www.arborday.org
