The Surface Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee (SWTPOT) is responsible for helping with the safe and efficient operation of a complex treatment plant, the storage and delivery of the finished product in adequate quantity. Helps ensure that the finished product complies with all Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) rules and regulations. The SWTPOT is also responsible for obtaining the necessary education and licensure to function as a Surface Water Treatment Plant Operator within one year of becoming eligible. Eligibility will include meeting all of the TCEQ’s requirements for both education and experience. Ability to read, understand and utilize wok orders, gauges, meters chemical reports, manuals, computers and other operating, measuring and testing devices. Ability to perform chemical analysis on water samples, interpret results and make proper adjustments to treatment processes preferred. Skill in use and maintenance of treatment plant equipment preferred. Thorough knowledge of the “Rules and Regulations for Public Water Systems” and the “Drinking Water Standards” preferred. Must be able to perform and oversee concurrent multiple tasks, exercise good judgment, problem solve under stress, perform complex algebraic math problems related to processes, and safely handle toxic chemicals. High school diploma or GED required. Current experience in surface water treatment plant operations preferred. Possession of a Grade “D” Operator’s Certification or equivalent required. Possession of a Grade “D” Water Operator’s Certification preferred. Experience in handling/using chlorine and other caustic, toxic, and corrosive supplies and chemicals preferred. Valid Texas Class C driver’s license with driving record that meets City guidelines required. Ability to obtain a Grade “C” Surface Water Operators Certification issued by the TCEQ within one year of becoming eligible required. Eligibility will include meeting all of the TCEQ’s requirements for both education and experience.
