The City of Victoria is committed to helping maintain a healthy environment for current and future generations by offering recycling services to residents. Recycling is the process of collecting, sorting, cleaning, treating, restoring and converting materials that would otherwise become solid waste and part of a landfill. Recycling helps keep disposal costs down while preserving natural resources and protecting the air, soil and groundwater. Recycling operates as a component of the Environmental Services Department and is managed by the Solid Waste Division.

Curbside Recycling is Coming to Victoria

The very first Recycling cart was delivered to Zhayvan Gayle on January 3rd, 2012. He had showed interest in a city-wide recycling program at City Council meetings in 2011.

The Curbside Residential Recycling Program will have it's first pick up day on February 6, 2012. Recycling will be collected on a different day from residents' normal trash pick-up. Victoria residents should have already received their 96-gallon green and yellow recycling container. If you did not receive your cart please call the Solid Waste Department at 361-485-3220. The curbside recycling program is only available at this time for residential customers. Future plans to expand the program to include businesses and apartment complexes are being discussed.

What Day of the Week Will Recycling be Picked-Up from My Household?

The first recycling pick-up dates will occur from February 6 - February 17, 2012. Recycling will be picked-up every other week on residents' assigned recycling pick-up day. To find out when your recycling will be picked-up, click here. Just look for your address to determine the day of the week your recycling will be collected. What can you Recycle?

The single-stream recycling program allows residents to mix recyclable paper, plastic, metals, cardboard and glass in one bin. The following are examples of items that will be accepted:

This sticker will also be posted on each recycling container for easy reference. Click here for a larger view.

The following are examples of items that will not be accepted: Styrofoam, electronics, ceramics, dishes, yard waste, motor oil containers, light bulbs, hazardous waste, window glass, mirrors and trash.

Collection Guidelines

- Place your recycling at the curb on collection day no later that 7 am. Place cart in the same place as the regular automated garbage cart, 5 feet from other carts, vehicles and other obstacles.

- Ensure the lid of the recycling cart is completely closed at time of collection.

- Remove contents from recyclables and rinse all containers before placing them in the recycling cart.

- Flatten cardboard boxes before placing them into the recycling cart.

Huvar Recycling Center

The Huvar Recycling Center will be closing as a part of the City' transition into curbside recycling. The last day that collections will be taken will be Saturday February 4th, 2012. Residents who recycle frequently can request an additional recycling cart(s) for an extra $5 monthly fee.

Victoria Kids Recycle

Victoria Kids Recycle is an educational paper recycling program for all elementary schools in the Victoria Independent School District. The program started Fall 2007 from a joint grant funded by Lyondell Bassell and Waste Management, with in-kind program support provided from the City of Victoria.

The Program aims to increase positive environmental behaviors among students, parents, and educators in the Victoria area by serving as a community resource for information and amenities.
