Environmental Education focuses on creating continuity for the importance of environmental stewardship in Kindergarten through 12th grades. The Blue Sky Initiative and the Victoria Kids Recycle programs are currently implemented in all Victoria Independent School District schools. The programs focus on air quality and recycling. High school students are encouraged to take up a leadership role by joining a teen group whose goal is to research environmental issues facing our community and formulate projects to combat those issues.
The Environmental Services Department extends beyond the classroom and provides public outreach to the community by offering a City Day Camp, an Earth Day Expo and parterships with schools, civic organizations and businesses seeking to make a positive impact. Education is offered in many forms - from hands-on activities and walks along the nature trail to fun and interactive presentations. It's never too early to teach kids about the importance of preserving the environment for present and future generations.
Blue Sky Initiative
Air Victoria promotes voluntary compliance with best practices for improving air
quality through public education and research in order to reduce ground level
ozone pollution, protect the health of citizens, promote economic development
and improve the quality of life in Victoria Texas.
City Day Camp
The Environmental Services Department invites teachers in the Victoria Independent School District to bring their students and participate in City Day Camp. Students will experience hands-on activities that meet the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) with Environmental Services, Parks and Recreation and the Public Library. Programs are available for students in Kindergarten through fifth grade. City Day Camp is held the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of September through May (with the exception of November and December) at the Hiller House, located at 3003 N. Vine and the Public Library, located at 302 N. Main. For more information, please contact Kate Garcia, Environmental Education Coordinator, at 361-485-3230 or kgarcia@victoriatx.org
Earth Day Expo
Earth Day Expo is an event coordinated each year in April by Environmental Services to celebrate Earth Day. The Expo is held at the Victoria Community Center and is attended by local elementary school students. Students enjoy fun, interactive, hands-on activities while learning about air quality, recycling, water conservation and many other environmental topics. Check out the scenes from Earth Day 2011!
Victoria Kids Recycle
Victoria Kids Recycle is an
educational paper recycling program for all elementary schools in the Victoria Independent School District. The
program started Fall 2007 from a joint grant funded by LyondellBassell and Waste
Management, with in-kind program support provided from the City of Victoria.
The Program aims to increase positive
environmental behaviors among students, parents, and educators in the Victoria
area by serving as a community resource for information and
amenities.
